NISM XV (Research Analyst) – Preparation Level After SEBI Changes

Thu Mar 26, 2026

The journey to becoming a SEBI-registered research analyst (RA) has recently become more accessible. With the latest regulatory changes, many aspirants are now exploring this career path. However, one important question remains: has the exam become easier, or has the responsibility increased?

Let’s understand this in a simple way.

What Has Changed?

Earlier, to become a Research Analyst, you needed a graduation in finance, commerce, or a related field

Relevant work experience

Now, as per the new SEBI circular:

A graduation in any field is acceptable. The experience requirement has been removed

New Requirement:

  • Any Graduation Degree
  • NISM Series XV – Research Analyst Certification
  • This has opened doors for many engineers, fresh graduates, and career switchers.

But Here’s the Reality…While eligibility has become easier, the exam itself still demands serious preparation.

This is not just another certification.

It directly impacts your ability to:

  • Understand financial markets
  • Analyze investments
  • Advise clients responsibly. So, the entry is easy, but competency is still expected.

What Does the Exam Look Like?

  • Around 15 chapters, a mix of theory + numericals
  • Case studies (20 marks total)
  • 5 case studies
  • Each case: 4 questions × 1 mark

And here’s the important part:

Many case study questions are numerically based. So, just reading theory is not enough.

How Should You Prepare?

A practical approach would be:

  • Understand each chapter clearly
  • Don’t just read, try to connect concepts.
  • Make your own short notes
  • Writing helps retention.
  • Focus on important points (one-liners). These help in quick revision and theory questions.
  • Practice numericals regularly. This is where many students lose marks. Solve mock tests seriously

This gives you real exam confidence.

How Much Time Is Required?

  • This depends on your background, but a realistic approach is:
  • Around 1 month of preparation
  • 3 hours of focused study daily
  • But only time is not enough. You should aim for high accuracy in mock tests (around 85–90%) before appearing for the exam.

Final Thought

SEBI has made the path to entry easier, but becoming a responsible Research Analyst still requires discipline and depth of knowledge. This certification is not just about passing an exam.

It is about building trust, credibility, and a long-term career in finance. So, prepare with seriousness, not just for clearing, but for understanding.
